Hlávka Dormitory

Hlávka Dormitory was built at the initiative of world-renowned architect Josef Hlávka, in response to the difficult situation facing poorer students looking for accommodation in Prague. The dormitory was built between 1902 and 1904, and was run by the “Josef, Marie and Zdeňka Hlávka Foundation”.
Its gables and entire façade were designed in Czech Renaissance style, and there is a statue of St Wenceslas in the lunette recess above the oriel window. The front façade includes sgraffito with the designs of students, provincial emblems, the St Wenceslas Eagle and inscriptions by Karel Ladislav Klusáček. František Urban designed the interior decoration.
The dormitory had all the latest facilities in its time, e.g. its own gym, bakery and a kitchen so that students could cook and enjoy as much fresh bread as they wanted, something other students also often took advantage of. They say that Hlávka refused to buy even a new pot for his own housekeeper, but he fitted out the new dormitory with modern and expensive Rott copper pots. Other renowned works of architecture designed by Josef Hlávka and his pupils include, e.g., the Vienna State Opera and the provincial maternity hospital U Apolináře in Prague.

The dormitory is situated in the centre of Prague (Prague 2). At the current time, it is part of the CTU Service Facilities Administration and CTU students are prioritised for accommodation. It provides a total of 237 beds within residential units with their own sanitary facilities. There is a shared kitchenette on each floor.

In cooperation with the Student Union of CTU, specifically the Klub Hlávkovy koleje club, students are offered not only accommodation, but also social and cultural activities. Students in the dormitory can use the study room and common room.

Accommodation at Hlávka Dormitory is particularly attractive for students, who are taught outside the main University Campus in Dejvice. The site at Charles Square (FS, FEL) are located around 5–7 minutes away by foot, the classrooms in Trojanova street (FJFI), while the sites at Konviktská (FD) and Břehová (FJFI) streets are within 15 minutes by tram and by foot. Karlovo náměstí metro station (Line B) is roughly 3 minutes by foot from the dormitory.
